Front Row Joe was able to chat with the 70's - 80's era rock legends of Zebra in the press tent at Rockfest '80s after their incredible set to talk about the Monsters of Rock cruise, the writing and recording of their new album 16 years in the making and their own that just happened. His debut album, coming seven years after the release of his Drklng EP, is titled Less Is Moor out March 20 via his independent label ZFK Records, referencing the Muslim people who inhabited North Africa in the Middle Ages. Katz, born Ojay Morgan, is familiar with the moors. As a theatre student at The New School's Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts in New York, the rapper was told that as a black person, he would likely only get to play the moors in Shakespeare's plays. That led him to create a one-man show titled Moor Contradictions, where the character of Zebra Katz was born. Speaking over the phone from Berlin, Ojay Morgan is conversational and to-the-point-a far cry from the outsized characters he inhabits on stage as an actor and musician. One of those characters is Zebra Katz. Morgan, a 33-year-old Jamaican-American native of South Florida, has spent the last six years touring Europe as Katz, and his 2013 hit under that name, Ima Read, laid the groundwork for his just-released debut full-length, LESS IS MOOR. Morgan is a trained actor hes appeared in productions of Ragtime, Little Shop of Horrors, and The Wiz. The rapper Zebra Katz finally says fuck you on his debut album Less is Moor, and, as he tells the poet Moor Mother, its been one hell of a journey.
