The setting was exotic and the story engaging. Though it starred Steve McQueen, who did an excellent job, its strength was the ensemble acting with a very talented cast including Richard Crenna, Richard Attenborough, Mako and Candice Bergen. The story was nicely involved and, though it portrayed the sailor's prejudices, did not feel condescending toward the Chinese as many war-type movies do. The men were caught up in the turbulent times and many of the conflicts portrayed seem to come more from troubled psyches. It is not Ramb. The Sand Pebbles is a 1966 American war film directed by Robert Wise in Panavision. It tells the story of an independent, rebellious U. Navy machinist's mate, first class, aboard the fictional river gunboat USS San Pablo, on Yangtze Patrol in 1920s China. The film features Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Richard Crenna, Candice Bergen, Mako, Simon Oakland, Larry Gates, and Marayat Andriane. Robert Anderson adapted the screenplay from the 1962 novel of the same name by Richard McKenna. The Sand Pebbles's Album Pleasure Maps. Listen to all tracks of Pleasure Maps for free. Please see my vinyl review of this album, after several months I still rate it more than highly.

Being a vinyl person, I’m always a bit miffed when bonus material has not been included on the wax itself.  Of course my beautiful blue record came with a download that featured the enchantingly hunting and lushly intoxicating Velvet Underground cover of “OH! Sweet Nuthin’” … but I didn’t want a WAV file, nor an MP3 file, and since I run a Mac, I refuse to download the program that would allow me to covert a FLAC file, which meant that being the forever completist, I had no choice but to purchase the CD as well, where again, the Velvet Underground cover has been included, with Amaya Laurcirica and Tanner trading verses in the Sand Pebbles’ cover “OH! Sweet Nuthin’”.  The song has been so elegantly and enticingly done that you can almost ignore the emotional desolation at the song’s foundation.  Pleasure Maps goes on to establish the Sand Pebbles as one of a kind, deeply under appreciated, with this album being an unbridled pleasure.

The Sand Pebbles have no worldwide distribution network, meaning you’re going to be paying a rather hefty price for shipment from Australia, even for the CD [also a limited edition gatefold], which are selling used on most sites for around twenty dollars.
