"The piano solos compiled in Replicas Rubato are drawn from a number of Numan's albums spanning 1978 to 1983 ... They were composed through a combination of annotations digitally stepped in note by note, open-meter (rubato) improvisation, and computer aided composition - perverse cyborgs which at first appear autonomously Human, but are actually material embodiments of the cultural production of Human identity. As Replicas of their namesakes, they are lies at worst, ambiguous half-truths at best, exuberant deceptions in the name of self-fulfillment in any case." ~ Terre Thaemlitz

Replicas Rubato Piano Interpretations of Gary Numan Titles Arranged & Performed by Terre Thaemlitz - Terre Thaemlitz. Originally posted on August, 1999. Gary Numan cover parodies by Terre, used as slide projections during live performances. List of Tracks. Yet another entry in Terre Thaemlitz's Rubato series. This particular volume of solo piano recordings explores Gary Numan's music. Not particularly any more exciting than the other similarly dull volumes. Thaemlitz could use his time more productively than this, you'd think. Novelty at its finest, even if Thaemlitz is an accomplished pianist. Track Listing. Rubato refers to music performance that does not adhere to a strict sense of time. From the original accompanying essay included as PDF: I purchased my first record in 1979 at the age of eleven after hearing Gary Numan's, Cars, in the now defunct Saints West roller disco in West Saint Paul, Minnesota. Its performance was ceremoniously accompanied by a flood of flashing colored bulbs and swirls of light rings from the mirror ball. With some sleuthing I discovered that the song was not performed by The Cars, as I had first suspected, and eventually located a copy o. Terre Thaemiltz Artist Format: Vinyl. 0 out of 5 stars 1 rating. This disc really brings the melodies to the surface but Terre also brings in some interpetation. Quite brilliant, when you consider the bulk of Gary's work is syntheticelectric by nature, hearing them in a stark setting of a piano-onl setting gives you a very different perspective on Gary's work that's both disquieting and familiar at the same time. All reviews I could find on Replicas Rubato stated that it was not much good so my expectations were pretty frosted when I gave this one a spin … surprise! This is a solo piano play bringing the man’s personal piano interpretations of Gary Numan titles and I can’t find anything bad at all here. Sure, he has done it before with Kraftwerk and sure it’s only pianoplay and nothing more, but what’s wrong with that? The composition sounds fresh, sparkling, never cheesy and unpretentious all the way. Does it belong in an electronica database? If Eno does, why not.
Agreed 100%!
