Caress of Steel is the third studio album by Canadian rock band Rush, released on September 24, 1975 on Mercury Records. It marked a development in the group's sound, moving from the blues-based hard rock style of their debut towards progressive rock. By mid-1975, Rush had stabilised with a line-up of guitarist Alex Lifeson, bassist and vocalist Geddy Lee, and drummer and primary lyricist Neil Peart, who had joined the group in 1974. They released Fly by Night 1975 which marked Rush's first foray. Caress of Steel featured long pieces broken up into various sections and long solo passages. It is often considered notable for the inclusion of the bands first two epic pieces, The Necromancer and The Fountain of Lamneth. I Think Im Going Bald was written for Kim Mitchell, who at the time was the frontman of the band Max Webster and a close friend of the band. Track three, Lakeside Park, was a reference to a park in St. Catharines, Ontario where Neil grew up and worked during the summer as a teenager. It is without a doubt Rushs first true foray into the realm of progressive rock. It is also their first album to contain a side-long epic and a song longer than 10 minutes. However, it was also their first and only commercial failure, leading to the album as a whole being cast aside by both the band and critics. Though songs such as Bastille Day and Lakeside Park are considered classics the latter was even played during Rushs farewell tour, R40, the remaining tracks are often seen as too complex or too ambitious.
