That's what the the title of rapper Rico's reggae project 'Irie' stands for in Rastafari. The contrast with this former Opgezwolle MC's life at the time he recorded this album, couldn't have been bigger. The lyrics for Naaktslak were written while he was homeless, due to the break-up with his girlfriend. That contrast is very apparent on the album. No stress, no worries, at peace with the world… That's what the the title of rapper Rico's reggae project 'Irie' stands for in Rastafari. The contrast with this former Opgezwolle MC's life at the time he recorded this album, couldn't have been bigger. The lyrics for Naaktslak were written while he was homeless, due to the break-up with his girlfriend. That contrast is very apparent on the album. Phreako Rico is very open about this difficult time in his life, for example in tracks like Geld, Mea Culpa and Opa (about his grandfather who has passed away). This could have led to a depressing record, but Rico, obstinate as ever, went for an uplifting reggae sound, which leaves you in a positive mood after all. He collaborated with artists like Henny Vrienten (who plays the bass guitar and sings backing vocals on a multitude of tracks), Beef's Pieter Both, Bert Vrieling and of course producer A.R.T. But the record has maintained Rico's own sound: The lyrics are sharp with clever puns in there, and there is a great flow to it all. The surprising combination of Dutch rap and hip hop beats with reggae and even dancehall works really well. It feels like you're chilling out on Opa's veranda in Aruba, enjoying the cooling trade-winds: No stress, no worries, at peace with the world…
