Sitting at 15 songs, the project captures the essence of Kass hunger and ultra-complex rhyme schemes from the original, while managing to sound somewhat more refined, modern and fresh. Despite all the drama and the fuss around Ras Kass' label beefs and run ins with the law, his freshman album, "Soul on ice", lyrically to this day remains the most complete and three dimensional hip hop album of all times. There is absolutely no one and nothing anywhere coming through as provocative, witty and thought provoking as he did on this album. As much as the hip hop world provided us with many lyricts luminaries, none of them reached the blunt complexity and heart tearing honesty displayed on many of these tracks. Just check these lines out from the opening track: "Then I be walking through the pearly gates with an infared scope ten millimeter heater Cause if my name ain't in the Book of Life I'm snuffing St. Peter Drinking the blood of Jesus Christ and pissing holy water no question who can come cleaner" And it doesn't stop there, believe me. While I am well aware of many other gems released prior to 1996, such as albums by Freestyle Fellowship, the first two albums by Organized Konfusion, or debut albums by Nas or Souls Of Mischief, according to me, not a single MC incinerated the mic with such ferocity and confidence as mr. John Austin. From women, personal issues, the afterlife, obsession with the high life and the thug mentality, politics, police brutality and history lessons - everything is covered over thirteen tracks. The problem is, there are enough quotes and classic lines delivered throughout this album, there is little I could write to try and depict his lyricism ability to you, dear reader. All I can say is that if you've appreciated works by some deep and introspective hip hop personas, such as Slug, Aesop Rock, Sage Francis, Illogic, Cannibal Ox, and what not - then you seriously need to hear this. I mean, peep his second to none word play on Etc.: "I dispense dope sentences without a prescription prefixes asphyxiate bitches who flips linguistics Representin the West, relevant to relentless sentences If renegade rebels resent this wicked syntax (then jack) Revert to revolution Ras reverse, reverberates Revolvin with written retalliation, rate repetitious Reflex flex, regret niggaz regress to less than recoup" However, if anyhow posssible, stand outs are Nature Of The Threat, the most tongue in cheek, and agressive verbal take on history you have ever listened to, then Sonset ("You got caught off the coast of the Pacific Ocean / found face down floatin' / with yo' fuckin' neck broken and "Now I'm a rap fan who never saw Bam rock the park / In the Bronx, but I still snap skulls in the dark"), The Evil That Men Do, in my opinion the humblest and most sincere autobiographical hip hop track along with Atmosphere's Nothing But Sunshine, and the smooth and laid back Anything Goes, with its acute and poking punch lines ("Niggaz got stripes like Tony the Tiger / But niggaz got strikes like Oral Hershiser" and "I get manicures to keep my cuticle suitable / Player, don't hate me because I'm beautiful") Back at the day of its release, "Soul on ice" was often criticized for its alleged weaker production, however, listening to it today, its beats and musical flow have stood the merciless test of time much better than some its contemporaries. The music is very often easy floating, listenable and not as strikingly potent as his rhymes. That means all of your attention will be focused on the lyrical department here. And trust me on this one: Ras Kass dropped the single greatest lyricist master stroke the scene had witnessed up to then. Whether you agree or not, that depends solely on your own judgement, and whatever you may feel towards modern underground microphone prophets is your own thing, but from a personal point of view, thinking back to 1996, there wasn't a single walking master of ceremony around who could spit rhymes half as dope as Ras Kass. And yes, that includes both, the east and the west coast, if that is your thing. My only complaint about him (you gotta have a negative comment regardless of it all, do you now) is the decision to jump on the west coast gangzta/thug rap band wagon, which he had been pursuing ever since the arrival of his second album "Rassasination"... It was always beyond me how could anybody record anything as great as "Soul on ice" and then reduce themselves to some generic hoe slapping, lifestyle of the rich and the famous type rap? Oh well, to end on a more positive note, this album is good enough, you won't ever feel the urge to pick up anything else by the artist. A ten of of a ten, any day of the week. This is good enough it would have taken an entire slew of winners of the lyricst lounge to make Ras Kass run for his money. Awesome album!
Best review I've ever read on this site. Thank you. I'm kinda embarrassed that I've only just heard about this cat. Everyone else you mention (i.e. his potential contemporaries) I've know...how did this slip under the radar?!I'd offer the young south London Rapper, Akala as a match/equal. Some of this in his freestyles on youtube- assuming we are talk about COLD HARD FACTS- are just FIRE. The biggest thing to let him down, I feel, is the music production that simply doesn't match the content of his rhymes.Check dis: /watch?v=sEOKgjoxoto
I like your take on this album. I believe what sets it apart from the others is it's originality in style. Ras Kass sometimes comes off as trying to be wiser than his own good. He talks about the nature of our struggle, but he breaks it all down to good old fashioned human condition - he pulls no punches. I can respect this though, especially with his unique delivery. Truly revolutionary such as the Original Soul On Ice by Eldrige Cleaver.
