Trans is the twelfth studio album by Canadian, American musician and singer-songwriter Neil Young, released on December 29, 1982. Recorded and released during his Geffen era in the 1980s, its electronic sound baffled many fans upon its initial release-a Sennheiser vocoder VSM201 features prominently in six of the nine tracks. In 1982, Young left Reprise Records, his record label since his debut album in 1968, to sign with Geffen Records-the label founded and owned by David Geffen, who had worked with. Trans - Neil Young. Neil Young kicked off a decade of weirdness with 'Trans,' released on Dec. What was Neil Young smoking in the 80s He jumped from one lazy genre exercise to the next, trying on everything from rockabilly Everybodys Rockin to old-school country Old Ways to big-band swing This Notes for You . He started and ended the decade strong, with 1980s Hawks and Doves and 1989s Freedom respectively. Young claimed that the album was a reflection of his inability to communicate with his son Ben, who has severe cerebral palsy. But not even members of Crazy Horse, who had recorded some of the new songs with Young, were aware of his tinkering. When it was released, Trans was Neil Young's most baffling album. He had employed a vocoder to synthesize his voice on five of the album's nine tracks, resulting in disembodied singing, the lyrics nearly impossible to decipher without the lyric sheet. And even when you read the words, Computer Age, We R in Control, Transformer Man, Computer Cowboy, and Sample and Hold seemed like a vague mishmash of high-tech jargon. But the vocoder, which robbed Young's voice of its dynamics and phrasing, still kept the songs from being as moving as they were intended to be. With Trans, Neil Young shocked fans and critics alike with a leftfield classic about how humanity was going to make sense of the computer age. Released on 29 December 1982, Trans is often considered to be Neil Youngs synth-pop album, but thats not really the case. There are, in fact, few keyboards on it, and if you want a guitar band, its got a great one. Neil Youngs polarizing 1982 album, influenced by new wave and heavy on the Vocoder, has long divided fans and critics. But beneath its cold exterior is a record with a lot of heart. It shoulda been me that died, Neil Young says, riding a bike alongside actor Russ Tamblyn. Tamblyn shrugs him off, and the two make plans for the evening. Tomorrow may never come, but tonight theyll take their dates to the drive-in, where Tamblyn begs Neil not to play his ukulele or to sing in that high squeaky voice. So goes the opening scene of the 1982 film Human Highway, an apocalyptic comedy written and directed by Neil Young under his long-standing nom de plume Bernard Shakey. Album 1982 9 Songs.
