I am absolutely amazed at how the album still sounds modern. Forty years after its June 1979 release, Unknown Pleasures stands as at least one of the defining albums of the punk era and maybe one of the defining albums of the last halfcentury, the answer depending on just how much black is in your wardrobe. Joy Divisions iconic debut album cover features a strange white-on-black pattern that has appeared on a million t-shirts since 1979. It even looks like something classic, beyond its time or place of origin even as it was a clear product of both - one of Peter Saville's earliest and best designs, a transcription of a signal showing a star going nova, on a black embossed sleeve. And just as theres no doubting the canonical impact of the album, the same can be said for its cover. The Porky UK copies have a certain gusto, but this is the one I play most. Clean, extended, pristine sounding--I think Hannett would choose this in a blind test.

The duochrome Peter Saville cover of this first Joy Division album speaks volumes. Its white on black lines reflect a pulse of power, a surge of bass, and raw angst. If the cover doesn’t draw you in, the music will.Following the first kick of drums and bass come the vocals: "I’ve been waiting for a guy to come and take me by the hand". This young band was the ‘guy’ to take post punk music by the hand and lead it to 80s electronica. Joy Division were unlike anything that came before them and anything that has ever come after them. The album is at times aggressive: "And all God’s angels beware. And all you judges beware, sons of chance take good care. For all the people out there, I’m not afraid anymore," Ian Curtis intones on Insight, lapsing, at times, into despondency. Unknown Pleasures is always brooding and always intense.Joy Division were four boys from 1970s Salford. They took their name from the literary prostitution wing of a Nazi concentration camp and they took their inspiration from the familiar atmosphere of run-down, post-industrial estates. Deep heaving baritones come out of a man so small he’d be blown away by the gust of his own voice. Together Curtis, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris created something approaching pure energy. On Shadowplay the guitars launch into a dimension reminiscent of the sonic dimensions that Bowie and Eno dwelt in, in the late 70s. The band’s sound is echo-y, cavernous, but thanks to Factory Records producer, Martin Hannett, never empty. By adding sound effects such as breaking glass, deep breaths, and footsteps he brings the music out of the mental torture of the lead singer and into the real world. It’s these details that keep you with it and make it feel more measured than their manic live performances. For this he was initially resented by the band. The classic She’s Lost Control builds intensity as threatening growling is replaced with manic crescendo. It’s simple, it’s terse. Day of the Lords feels like it should accompany an Edgar Allen Poe tale, as pulsing drums and howling guitars penetrate the air towards an unknown conclusion.Unknown Pleasure borders on nihilism, but is pregnant with expectation. And like Bowie’s Low, once heard it's never forgotten. It’s like going to the doctor and having your ears syringed. This is a sound that’s ready to explode. And it still feels personal.

It's not "Waiting for a guy", bwahahaha. There's a Japanese cd version of "Still" which included lyrics in a most hilariously misheard manner. It also spoke of the rather suggestive "a guy to take me by the hand", but the actual word is really GUIDE: a Guide to take me by the hand. The Japanese "Still" also interprets a line of "New Dawn Fades" as "a lonely girl won't set you free", instead of "a loaded gun".

band with such an incredible potential, pity in ended way too soon

Dark lyrics with a real raw meaning and awesome instrumentation. This album kicks some ass. Real awesome album can't wait to get it on vinyl.

Important thing to consider when evaluating your release of anything against what is here on discogs is the role that record shops play. I have the original textured sleeve of UP with the 1980 repress inside. This can easily happen. If you think about the fact that record shops put sleeves out on display it is easy to see how a record from one pressing can easily be incorrectly placed inside the sleeve of other pressings.

question: that 6 variations listed here, have order? I mean the variation 1 comes first? or is imposible to know which was the very 1st print etc... ?? any help?

ludwig09 I have the same edition as you - inner sleeves are white/cream blackground (rather than the grey shown in photos) and labels black and white (rather than dark red as shown in photos) - same run out text as you mention. Looks like the claim of this list being complete is a little over optimistic.Ash

Altough I'm very familiar with the new wave, synthpop age. I could never listen the J. D. albums because I've found them absolutely uninteresting. Without any prior knowledge about the facts and the history of the band, I must say the same: after having listened the album, I find it very boring and knowing the "importance" of the group and the death of the singer will not help at all. Sorry, guys! Those times it had maybe very different and pioneering meaning but now it all seems very overrated for some locative reasons.
Beardana
Boring? That’s a little extreme. If you like Rock music and aren’t restricted to a single genre, I don’t see how anyone would call it boring. That not withstanding, it’s the production that’s important. Martin Hannett was a genius. But I will say Closer is more interesting.

I can see how someone might feel this way. I still think this is a damn good album anyway. There aren't a ton of standout tracks, but if you ignore its "legendary" status and all that, it's a solid record all the way through. I also find it pretty innovative. It took the energy of punk and refined it into post-punk thru use of drum machines, slower tempos, and quasi-disco rhythms. There are some decent guitar solos and chilling, eerie vocals. I like the atmospheric, spooky, almost cinematic soundscapes.

I've got what I thought was an original pressing. I bought it in the late 80's when CD's were beginning to take over and obviously a number of people were getting rid of their vinyl. I bought it to replace an original which was "lent" to someone who never returned it, and moved on with it.The album I've got now is in a textured sleeve, with a rounded corner inner sleeve. It's got the "Porky Prime Cut" "Step" and outside and inside, but the matrix numbers aren't shown above. It's got S-15 on the inside, and S-20 on the outside.Does anyone else have the same matrix numbers on theirs?
BORZOTA
I think i have the same version has you. i believe there's a S34 on the "inside" it's not after "Step" though, you have to work your way round toward the FACT 10. it's very faintly scribed though. On the other side i have S 3b too but i'm thinking this is S 36 and that the cutter just had a bit of a wobbly hand?

bondquest - I've got another variant not listed above, "Side A/B - Variation 6" if you will, nothing after "STEP" on INSIDE and "S-3b" or "S-36" on OUTSIDE ... I suppose it could be a "36" but the back of the "6" is straight up like a lower-case "b", not curved like a "6".Personally I think obsessing over matrix numbers is a bunch of twaddle anyway ... I bought it when it came out in 1979 (textured sleeve, rounded corner inner sleeve), that's good enough for me. Still pretty much the greatest album ever made IMHO, it's all about the music not the matrix numbers!

Well... last weekend our new canine roommate Felix and I were just sitting in a rather emptied room which is prone to renovation but still has a stereo. I sat on a rather uncomfortable chair with Felix on my lap. I had a bootle of red wine with me and Felix had never ever listened to any music before because he was caged, unloved and like thrown away due to being like a worthless creature... Well... so, together we started listening to "Unknown Pleasures" ... He was curious, he was maybe frightened also with those damn speakers being his beloved enemies, and occasionally he left the room just to return a few secs after. So together we sifted through the whole album until we reached "I remember nothing". Felix was totally focussed. Each of those strange sounds made him turn his head, repositioning his ears to listen what the hell was going on there. And after the song stopped, I had understood. And put on "Closer" for me, and Felix.

I have something near to matrix variation 4 (as they are arranged above) with Textured cover, Garrod & Lofthouse credit on bottom right of back cover. The printed inner sleeve without rounded corners.. Runout grooves: A PORKY PRIME CUT FACT - 10 - OUTSIDE 1 THIS IS THE WAYA PORKY PRIME CUT STEP FACT - 10 - INSIDE 1 Purchased very shortly after original release from a small record shop in Ayr in Scotland (I don't think they'd shifted much JD stock units at this point).

I have a Matrix Variation 4 [as they are arranged now] with no numbers after STEP that also seems to also have an additional LYN matrix #. The vinyl is deep black and not translucent in any way. I assume that STEP + a digit correspond to later pressings, S for Stereo.

One of the finest Masterworks in the history of music-enough said!

Scary, plodding, deep, depressing and extremely powerful LP. I must've listened to this hundreds of times and it STILL sounds amazing. The music, Martin Hannett's production, and Ian Curtis' vocals takes you an harrowing journey into the dark recesses of your mind. As far as I'm concerned, this album sets a standard that can't be topped 27 years later.
