Westering Home is the ninth album by English saxophonist John Surman recorded in 1972 and released on the Island label. This is the first album where he used the possibilities of overdubbing and composing on the fly. He further states, The album is vividly experimental yet deeply intimate while previous LPs like How Many Clouds Can You See seemed fascinated. Westering Home captures British reedist John Surman at his most melodic and soulful, channeling the audacity of previous outings to create music that's still daring but with a new emphasis on structure, texture and tone. The album is vividly experimental yet deeply intimate - while previous LPs like How Many Clouds Can You See seemed fascinated with the reaches of sound, here Surman turns inward to explore the heart and mind. At the same time, his playing boasts its signature physical prowess, but with a new economy of scale - his solos are honed to a razor's edge, and not a singl. John Surman - Westering Home 1972. Originally released on Chris Blackwell's Island Records, John Surman's first solo album was a complete departure from his previous works. It presaged the canon of pastoral solo recordings he was to produce later for ECM in contrast to his more robust and conventionally orchestrated recordings. His second and final album for Island, Morning Glory, a year later, was a reversion to the dynamic manifestations to which Surman had been hitherto associated. I’m just wondering what makes this FMR release of “Westering Home” unofficial. Is it because FMR released it but failed to obtain all the proper licenses, or did some bootlegger press up unsanctioned copies of this CD using the FMR logo without permission in an effort to make it appear legitimate? Is it a transcription from an LP? Is it, in fact, actually unofficial? Historically, FMR has been a very respectable label run by Trevor Taylor.

I wish Discogs would require the answers to these questions like this before allowing a release to be labelled as “unofficial,” especially now that Discogs has started prohibiting the sales of “unofficial” releases in increasing numbers.
