Brief Lives is a collection of short biographies written by John Aubrey 16261697 in the last decades of the 17th century. Aubrey initially began collecting biographical material to assist the Oxford scholar Anthony Wood, who was working on his own collection of biographies. With time, Aubrey's biographical researches went beyond mere assistance to Wood and became a project in its own right. Brief Lives'. Item Preview. John Aubrey, Andrew Clark. There are idiosyncratic books and then there are idiosyncratic books. Aubrey's Brief Lives along with Le Grand Meaulnes is the most idiosyncratic book of which I know. There are some who would argue for The Anatomy of Melancholy. There are those who would nominate others. But I think that John Aubrey was born and died within his own head and never absorbed anyone else's criteria for anything. Not for biography, not for history, not for memoirs or diaries. And Lawson Dick's Introduction, The Life and Times of John Aubrey, is a miracle of synthesis and compression: certainly one of the finest biographical essays ever written. Read more. Thomas Hobbes was his friend as were many other famous people. Получить до Пн, 6 июл - Чт, 6 авг от Florida, США. Easton Piercy, Wiltshire, Inglaterra, 12 de marzo de 1626 Oxford, 7 de junio de 1697 Vidas breves. Posterity in books is fickle. For the odd and unpredictable afterlives of some English classics, consider the case of John Aubrey. This gossipy gentleman-scholar, antiquarian and pioneer biographer died in 1697, after a life brushed by the wings of history. At the time of his death, his chances of being remembered must have seemed vanishingly slim. The only title published in his lifetime Miscellanies: A Collection of Hermetick Philosophy 1696 was deemed mad. John Aubrey, who flourished between 1626 and 1697, was an English country gentleman of lively intellectual interests but rather infirm character. He was, one suspects, made unsure of himself by an obtuse and obstructive father, and his life became a series of projects that almost invariably ended unsatisfactorily. As Aubrey's Brief Lives, it has figured as a source book for historians
