The album was instantly regarded as a classic, cementing GZAs reputation as a lyrical mastermind and furthering RZAs reputation as a producer. It featured all 9 members of the Clan as well as Wu-affiliate Killah Priest. Liquid Swords Q&A. A&R Wendy Goldstein. Label Geffen Records. Overall, though, Liquid Swords is possibly the most unsettling album in the Wu canon even ahead of Ol' Dirty Bastard, and it ranks with Enter the Wu-Tang 36 Chambers and Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx as one of the group's undisputed classics. Read full review. With an unparalleled balance of lyricism and production, The Gza remains as one of the best storytellers since Slick Rick. It reignites what 36 Chambers did back in 93 and reminds us that hip hop isn't a genre, it's a lifestyle. For The Gza, a lifestyle full of chess boxing in the rough, dark boroughs of NYC. If you're a fan of Hip Hop, this album should be at the front of your record crate. The fourth Wu-Tang Clan solo album, Liquid Swords is an out-and-out masterpiece on which GZA brought his A-game, ruining it for everyone else. As a solo artist, GZA himself would go silent for four years, returning with 1999s Beneath The Surface, a more than worthy effort at a time when the hip-hop landscape had changed again, its focus turning to the south as OutKast, Timbaland and The Neptunes ushered in a new era. But Liquid Swords remains timeless, its stature reflected in the fact that GZA has performed it live in its entirety since an honour more often reserved for classic rock and prog albums
