While growing up in Des Moines, Iowa, Oatts gained an interest in music from his father, Jack Oatts, who was a saxophonist himself and a respected music educator in the Midwest. After high school, Oatts attended Drake University for one year before dropping out and moving to Minneapolis to begin a career in music in 1972. In 1977, he was called by Thad Jones to join The Thad Jones. This CD features the team of pianist Gary Dial and Dick Oatts who is heard on tenor, alto, soprano and flute along with bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Joey Baron, playing off of a ten-piece brass ensemble conducted by Rich DeRosa. The brass is primarily used for color but there are plenty of fine solos from both Oatts whose soulful sound is out of the Ernie WattsMichael Brecker tradition and the versatile Dial. At times the arrangements are reminiscent of the Mel Lewis Orchestra. If you think Ellington has the right idea in using a Jazz Orchestra and a piano to make great American Music, you owe it to yourself to buy this album. Garry Dial is a brilliant Jazz player and from the opening composition, he creates fantastic, optomistic, American brass jazz. He and Mr. Oatts are smart guys and they know how to balance their use of the brass section to present a theme against their individual improvisations. This is a big event CD. A graduation CD, an important first date CD. DIAL & OATTS Brassworks 1991 US 11-track CD starring pianist Gary Dial and saxophonistflutist Dick Oatts leading an inventive acoustic jazz quartet with Jay Anderson on bass and Joey Baron drums
