Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, in 1806. Its first performance by Franz Clement was unsuccessful and for some decades the work languished in obscurity, until revived in 1844 by Joseph Joachim. Since then it has become one of the best-known violin concertos. Beethoven had previously written a number of pieces for violin and orchestra. At some point in 17902, before his musical maturity, he began a Violin Concerto in C, of which only a fragment of the first. Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, is his last large orchestral work. It holds an important place in the violin repertoire and is one of the most popular and most frequently performed violin concertos in history. A typical performance lasts just under half an hour. Mendelssohn originally proposed the idea of the violin concerto to Ferdinand David, a close friend and then concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Although conceived in 1838, the work took another six years. The Great Conductors: Franz Konwitschny Conducts Beethoven Ouvertures & Violin Concerto, Op. Their recording of the Beethoven Violin Concerto, made seven years after they first met, is one of the treasures of the EMI archive, a testament to a bygone era of spontaneous and deeply subjective music-making. There is a nobility to the reading that has never been equaled, an unforced passion that would be difficult for any of today's musicians to duplicate. EMI also includes a 1973 recording of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor with the London Symphony Orchestra and André Previn. Here again, Perlman's playing is exemplary, both in technique and musicianship. The first movement gets off to a somewhat slow start, but the pace quickly picks up and the remainder of the movement is taken at its usual passionate, forward-moving tempo. The finale is highly spirited and the nimble interplay between the violin and winds is tossed off with exciting precision. EMI's sound quality throughout is clear and well-balanced.
