Essentially all of the instruments, singing, arranging and production is by Rossen himself, with a bit of help from friends Scott Hirsch, Eric Slick of Dr. Dog, and Ian Davis & Kris Nolte. Unlike Grizzly Bear's more meticulous and piecemeal approach to songcraft and recording, much of what is heard on this EP are first takes, which yields something new, yet inherently Rossen's. Silent Hour, Golden Mile. Critic Score. User Score. Rossen is a master craftsman and one of the best songwriters in modern rock and with Silent HourGolden Mile hes set the bar tantalisingly high for Grizzly Bears return. Full Review. Best of 2012. Worst of 2012. His first solo EP, Silent HourGolden Mile, is a brief but majestic song cycle full of fingerpicked notes that babble like tributaries, echoing piano chords that cut through silence like rocks rippling the surface of a pond, and in a few cases, explosive mountains of sound that jut up out of nowhere. Expansive yet graceful in its moments of restraint, Silent HourGolden Mile shows off Rossen's skill as an arranger. Tracks like Golden Mile on which he's joined by Dr. Dog drummer Eric Slick and Silent Song which is streaked with the signal-flare wails of Scott Hirsch's lap steel feel full and lush but never cluttered the emotion of the songs is free to bob unobstructed to the surface. Grizzly Bear are one of those bands that somehow make you feel smarter as a result of listening to them, and though Rossen dwells in the same musical territory, his sound is more immediate and doesn't require weeks to get your head around. He's had some comparisons to George Harrison already, but it's an honorary comparison and is distilled best in Silent Song and Golden Mile, both perfectl. Daniel Rossen Format: Audio CD.
