Prior to signing with Vanguard Records in 1967, Country Joe McDonald and his group, the Fish, had already recorded two low-budget EPs as talking versions of McDonald's self-realized magazine Rag Baby - a Bay Area adaptation of the folk magazine Broadside. Country Joe & The Fish Country Joe McDonald Format: Audio CD. I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag and Superbird are both rendered as folky jug-band tunes, the former overdubbed with war sound effects, and the latter with a directness that bites even harder than the later album take. Rounding out the Rag Bay collection is a purpose-built 1971 EP by Country Joe, sans Fish, that was to be sold at a series of anti-war FTA Free the Army shows to fund the shows and veteran's activities. Few copies apparently made it to shows to be sold many having been lost or burned. The first lineup of Country Joe and the Fish formed in mid-1965, when Country Joe McDonald vocals, acoustic guitar and Barry The Fish Melton lead guitar, vocals came together as a duo. The two musicians had a background rooted in folk music, were enamored with the recordings of Woody Guthrie, and worked on the local acoustic coffeehouse circuit in the early. The band's side of the EP featured two originals by McDonald, an acoustic version. Collectors Items: The First Three EPs, Rag Baby 1980.
