For Emma, Forever Ago is the debut studio album by American indie folk band Bon Iver. It was first self-released in July 2007, and later saw wide release on the Jagjaguwar label in February 2008. The album is principally the work of singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. Whilst living in Raleigh, North Carolina, Vernon fell ill with mononucleosis and a liver infection, and grew frustrated with his songwriting and life. He left Raleigh and drove to his father's remote hunting cabin an hour northwest of his. For Emma, Forever Ago - Bon Iver. The rawness of For Emma, Forever Ago-often stitched together with little more than Vernon's layered falsetto, low-fi acoustic guitars, and creaking ambience-gives it a chilling, love-at-first-listen power. And while tracks like Skinny Love and the For Emma are standalone highlights in their own right, the albums seamless tour of heartache is greater than. Justin Vernon, recovering from the end of a relationship and the collapse of his band, retreated to a cabin in rural Wisconsin with his acoustic guitar. For Emma, Forever Ago demonstrates the transformative power an artist wields over his environment. It's a record about space just as much as it seeks to trap and make surrounding space its own, to imbue itself with the personality that exists between notes. Full Review. This is a 4.5 star pressing. Probably the best one out there at the moment though. I love this album and it sounds great on vinyl, but there are some slight clicks/surface noise especially on side B where you notice it in the quiet sections. Still, if you love this album you can’t go wrong with this pressing.
Having owned this for a year or so - the sound is so much better than the original vinyl. No comparison at all - also the sleeve quality is really really nice. However if you love this LP, I would recommend forking out for this re-issue compared to an original.
The Rollers of Vildar
For those wondering how this compares to the first press of this album, I finally got around to listening to this, and it sounds better. However, it still is pressed by Jagjaguwar, who after almost 25 years in the industry, still hasnt learned to press a good record. As such it is horribly off centered and noisy in a few spots like every single record they have ever made. So it definitely isnt a great pressing, however, a tiny bit better than the first one, though in my opinion still sounds very small and not open and airy (could just be the nature of the recording, considering it was recorded in a small cabin). Also, just an FYI, this is still available for purchase on Bon Iver's official webstore for $25.
Of course you know they don’t press their own records but use the same plants as every other label. In fact, RTI, which pressed the original release, is considered to be one of the best.
Does this edition sound better than the 4AD versions? Just wondering if it's worth it to pay double (almost 40€ with the shipping), leaving aside the fact that this gatefold jacket is very nice.
Highly disappointed with this pressing. Lots of surface noise on both sides which is especially bothersome on the quietest tracks (RE:stacks, for instance). The jacket is beautiful though.
So funny watching people try and flip this... still available from the official store folks
How much! come on..... $25 (bit more in the UK/EU).
The 10th Anniversary show was the first night they sold this. I was told it is a release of 10K, so hardly limited.
This was for sales at the London shows last night. So hardly that limited. There was also an Orange 22 Million LP - that is not on discogs.
Does it say who mastered this release? Can someone confirm that the barcode is on a sticker and not printed on the cover?
The barcode is on a sticker on the plastic wrap, I confirm.
Mastered by Nick Peterson at Track and Field in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
I have the 10 yr anniversary CD version, can't see that on Discogs. Barcode is definitely a sticker on the back, nothing on the CD itself. Don't know about Vinyl.
Can anyone report if this sounds better/worse than the original vinyl release? Appreciate it!
mine the same sounds amazing, except restocks - slight distortion. compared to the original it is BEAUTIFUL
I'd like to know if it has the brushing / whooshing sounds that the other pressings have. Anybody with a good ear and system...?
It sounds GREAT. A few pops and clicks, but I have NOT cleaned or vacuumed it yet, either. Very little surface. A delight from front to back.
yes, I'd love to know if it sounds better as well.
My copy sounds BEAUTIFUL, except that "re:stacks" has just a little surface noise. I haven't heard any other pressings, but I'd say this one's a winner
I also wish to know if it sounds better (word)
I haven't opened mine yet, I'll let you know soon
Who says this one is limited to 500 copies? I’ve never heard of that. And still sold on their website.
Might be a bit of a stretch to say that the pressing was pressed for that show specifically.
I was at the show that this pressing was pressed for, in Milwaukee. The venue holds about 20,000 people and it seemed like every other person that night had a copy of this on LP, so this "500" number is just laughable. It's limited, sure, but there are a TON out there.
It appears that it's sold out on the website now.
Agreed that the press quantity is unknown. Here is what the email from Bon Iver said about it when on prerelease, "we are thrilled to announce a limited edition reissue of For Emma . . . on LP & CD. The reissue includes new artwork and a reflective in-depth essay written by Trever Hagen. The reissue will be available worldwide on February 16, 2018 exclusively through and at the FOR EMMA, TEN YEAR merch table."
Yeah, there was no announced limitation. Please enter at least 4 more
