The string quartets of Béla Bartók punctuate the evolution of his style and the turning points in his life. The second quartet reflects the period of World War One and his troubled personal life. The fourth explores rhythm, tonality and timbre to produce magnificent and unprecedented sonorities. 2, 4 and 6 of Bartok, with the Jerusalem Quartet as the featured ensemble. The implication is that a second CD will follow at some point, with the odd-numbered quartets. If this is the plan, then based on the first CD, it's a good plan. The Jerusalem Quartet give very fine performances throughout, committed and all about the music, not themselves. The String Quartet No. 2 by Béla Bartók was written between 1915 and October 1917 in Rákoskeresztúr in Hungary. It is one of six string quartets by Bartok. The work is in three movements: Moderato. Allegro molto capriccioso. In a letter to André Gertier, Bartók described the first movement as being in sonata form, the second as a kind of rondo and the third as difficult to define but possibly a sort of ternary form.
